I am a personal trainer, a brother, a friend, a son and many other things in between. This means I’ve heard every pathetic excuse under the sun for being fat, inactive, and generally dissatisfied with life and worse, putting up with it.

I do not intend to launch into goal setting here as that is a whole other topic. This day I want to dissect the excuses which typically surround attempts to lose weight and uncover what they really mean.

You should then be able to start understanding your own psychology. You can then re-wire the thought processes which are stopping you achieving the body you want.

What you state - “I have not got time to prepare healthy food because of this and that. It’s not possible”

What you mean - “I have not got ten minutes to boil some pasta or make a sandwich because I sit up late at night. I then cannot get up when my alarm goes off”

You need to get to bed half an hour earlier and get up 15 minutes earlier and the problem is sorted. In today and age of watching any program whenever you want, if you must watch your favourite program, save it until early evening the next day.

Also, you state you haven’t got time to prepare food but you spend half an hour walking to the shop at lunch to buy a salt-laden packaged meal. Why not use this time in the morning, get to work a bit later and work through lunch?

Another substitute is to cook double what you need for an evening meal then let some cool and put it in a tub for tomorrow. How simple is that?

What you state - “I haven’t got time to exercise because of this job and that job. I just cannot get to the gym”

What you mean - You still believe gyms are the only way to get fit and lose weight. This means you are stuck in the out-dated belief that long, boring cardio sessions and machine-based routines are the key. Because the travel to the gym and the workout takes so long you think you have not got time.

Learn to train at home with full body exercises, skipping, dumbbells, kettlebells and medicine balls and you will experience great results in half the time. They also cost a lot less than your gym membership!

What you state - “I had to go out at the weekend because it’s a birthday. My life will be over if I do not go”

What you mean - You either don’t really want to lose body fat or you’ve some twisted belief that your friends won’t like you if you don’t polish off 2 bottles of wine or 10 pints on a Friday evening. If that is the case, I recommend reviewing your social circles!

What you say - “I had to eat a cake because it was someone’s birthday at work. The list came round and I didn’t want to be left out”

What you mean - You just could not resist because your goals do not mean as much to you as you keep saying. Again how many people do you think will remember if you politely pass on the list and don’t order anything?

This is an internal resistance issue not external. It is not your colleagues fault it is yours for not just saying no!

What you say - “I have the ability to’t find time to exercise. I’ve to keep the children busy and take them to this and that”

What you mean - You are too lazy to just get outdoors and run around with your kids. You’re actually depriving them of what they want to do and will really enjoy!

Kids are naturally programmed to run around, climb things, jump over things and generally mess around until they finally run out of steam. They’ll also copy what you do.

Go to the park! Run around with them do some bodyweight exercises and watch how they are quite happy to replicate and will really enjoy themselves!

You will also be one of the rare few doing their bit for responsible parenting! Don’t you think your children will develop much better than if you are contributing to increasing the size of the Nintendo army?

Alternatively when they are doing karate or swimming or whatever else you get them involved in, get your trainers on and go running or cycling - use the time wisely instead of going for a mom’s meeting in the coffee bar.

What you state - “I do not know what to do. It’s too confusing.”

What you mean - You can’t be bothered to spend a tiny time and money to be educated by a fitness professional.I don’t realise that they can show me how to optimize my exercise time so that I only need to spend 30 minutes doing a session.

You’re happy to spend money on another dress, a night of wine or an expensive 4 hour round of golf (thought you did not have time…), However, you will not spend some cash learning how to stay fit and healthy.

What you state - “I’ve tried everything. Nothing works”

What you mean - You have tried a couple of commercial diets which are very well designed marketing scams. They helped you lose 10 pounds dramatically by eradicating carbs or some other absurd means so that you thought you were doing well. The fat then came back with a vengeance.

You haven’t learnt how to use weight training and food to ramp up your metabolism. You cannot accept that it there is no miracle pill and you’ll have to work hard and eat cleanly!

What you say - “I just cannot lose weight because I have got a thyroid problem. That’s the only reason because I have tried.”

What you mean - You have failed miserably at losing weight because you’ve relied on crash dieting and ended up worse than before. As a result you have scoured the internet not for a solution but for an excuse to justify your failure.

You’ve heard thyroid issues can make weight loss very difficult. The symptoms sounded roughly familiar so you chose this excuse to give to everyone. You self-diagnosed yourself without actually getting checked out by your GP.

It’s easier to find excuses than solutions which is what you have done. That’s just lazy and frustrating for those who really do have a thyroid problem.

Take time to think about whether you’re looking for solutions or you’re actually looking for excuses as to why you cannot transform your body. Often it is simply a case of time-management and positivity. Master these and you will see large changes in your body and lifestyle!
