Basic Guide To Vaginal Yeast Infection

Posted on Aug 26, 2008 07:02:38 AM

Vaginal yeast infection, also known as candidiasis, is a brought about by the abnormal increase in the number of species of Candida, of which Candida Albicans is the most common culprit. A type of fungus, Candida Albicans is normally present on the human skin and in various areas of the body where it is generally warm and moist.

Under a variety of conditions, a change in the environment where they live in causes them to increase in quantity beyond normal, causing the infection. Among the signs and symptoms of vaginal infection include: itching, burning and painful sensation in the vaginal area; redness and soreness in the affected region; a noticeable discharge. Encountering these may help you properly identify the signs and symptoms of vaginal yeast infection.

Itching, burning and painful sensation
For some women, the easiest way to identify if she’s suffering from vaginal yeast infection is that she itches severely in and around the vaginal area. The itching might not be present at all times. But when it does, it itches so badly a lot she finds it difficult to perform normal daily activities, such as to ambulate.

Urination may also go together with a burning sensation, or be generally painful for her to do so. But this bothersome urination might also be present with other forms of infections, such as urinary tract infection UTI. One good way to tell apart the burning sensation that is caused by a yeast infection from that which is caused by a urinary tract infection is to notice when exactly the sensation is experienced. The urine is acidic in nature. So if the burning sensation is felt when the urine reaches outside, then it is most likely brought about by a yeast infection. Urinary tract infection, on the other hand, causes a burning sensation as the urine passes through the urinary tract on its way out.

Redness and soreness in the affected region
A slight to severe redness localized in the vaginal and vulvar areas is another sign of yeast infection. Soreness and irritation of the stated areas may also be presenting symptoms, which make sexual intercourse an extremely painful experience for the woman.

Unusual seepage down there
Most women associate a thick discharge that somewhat resembles cottage cheese with vaginal yeast infection. Its consistency may typically range from thick and not clumpy at all, faint yellow to white, and to thin and clear. The discharge may or may not have a starchy odor to it, something that resembles the smell of bread or beer. Yeast, by the way, is used in making bread as a leavening agent, and in the fermentation of beer.

Since not everyone who has vaginal yeast infection gets a discharge, still the ideal and easiest way for a woman to tell whether or not she is experiencing yeast infection symptoms is that she itches in and around the vaginal area.

Yeast infection in other body parts
As mentioned earlier, Candida is normally present in the skin and in most areas of the body that are warm and moist. This means that signs and symptoms of candidiasis might also appear in different areas of the body in many different ways.

Yeast infection may occur in the mouth, in diaper areas and skin folds. And in people with weakened immune system, such as those with AIDS, yeast infection may also affect the gastrointestinal tract, such as the esophagus and the stomach.

Relief Your Stress By Volunteering

Posted on Aug 22, 2008 06:54:24 AM

At times, it can seem as if youre on a constant treadmill at work. There are deadlines to meet, people to consult, relationships to cultivate. You might feel as if youre under consistent stress, but you dont know how to manage it effectively. You could always quit your job, but your next position might be just as stressful.

Stress can take a tremendous toll on both body and spirit. It can leave you feeling exhausted, making it hard for you to concentrate. You might be more susceptible to illness as a result of your stress, resulting in increased absenteeism from work. You may be more prone to getting into accidents, and you may feel as if youre on edge much of the time.

There are a number of strategies you can employ to deal with stress. But perhaps one of the most rewarding is to engage in volunteer work. There’s something so comforting about donating your time to helping someone else.

The mere act can elevate your spirits, helping you to better cope with the stressors in your life. You are giving a tremendous gift, the gift of your time and talent. And you find your reward in the smiles on the faces of the people or animals youve assisted.

If youre considering volunteering, you dont want the search for volunteer opportunities to be stressful. Therefore, youll want to make the process as simple as possible. A good resource can be your local newspaper. Often, the Sunday paper lists organizations that are looking for volunteers. The newspaper usually provides complete contact information, so you wont have to hunt around for a phone number.

Deciding which organization to volunteer for can be a challenge. There are so many causes worthy of our attention. For instance, there are groups that assist people in times of disaster groups that lobby for research to find cures for debilitating diseases homeless shelters soup kitchens and pet shelters. You might also think about volunteering at a school, where teaching assistants and mentors are always appreciated.

In order to decide where to put your talents to use, you might ask yourself some questions. For instance, how much time can you realistically devote to volunteer work

Are you limited to doing your volunteering in the evenings or on weekends How much of your own money can you spend in connection with your volunteer work What causes are the most important to you The answers to these questions could help you to select the volunteer opportunity thats right for you.

Next, youll want to tour the volunteer facility. You want to get a sense of whether you’ll enjoy the work. If you find that the other volunteers are difficult to work with, it could simply produce more stress in your life.

Usually, an initial tour will help to give you a good idea of what it would be like to actually volunteer at the facility. Also, be sure to find out if the organization offers training to its volunteers. This could be quite important, especially if you have only a nodding acquaintance with the work of the organization.

Volunteering does require commitment, and you might be wondering if that commitment will add additional stress to your life. Actually, the opposite will probably be true. If you find yourself being energized by your volunteer work, youll be able to put your problems in superior perspective.

Knowing the difficulties that other people face can make your troubles seem quite negligible in comparison. However, you will want to make sure that you dont overcommit. Devote only a limited amount of time to your volunteer work, and resist the urge to do more. Otherwise, you could find yourself fatigued by the end of the week and unable to perform well on your job.

Volunteering can be one of the great joys in life. It is a privilege to serve other people, to make a difference in another persons life. Through your volunteer work, youll be able to meet people you might otherwise not have the opportunity to encounter.

You can forge friendships which can last a lifetime. Youll be contributing greatly to your neighborhood and your society, and your little corner of the world should be brighter because of it.
